Sloane Stephens' loudest fan kept shouting advice and encouragement from the stadium stands Monday, perhaps providing the nudge she needed to shake a post-U.S. Open slump.

Stephens earned her biggest victory since winning last year's Open, beating No. 3-ranked Garbine Muguruza 6-3, 6-4 Monday to reach the quarterfinals at the Miami Open.

"Close the door, Sloane!" the spectator hollered near the end, and she did. During a post-match on-court interview, Stephens thanked the fan, who has been to her past two matches.

Johanna Konta scored a 6-2, 6-1 defeat over Elise Mertens in Miami.

“Obviously the stadium holds good memories,” said Konta, who will play Venus Williams. “When I warmed up on the court earlier I thought ‘This is quite nice,’ and you let in the good feelings of past experiences on certain courts. I think next time I play on the Centre Court at Wimbledon I will feel the same way.”

Mertens is ranked No. 21 after a sensational 12 months which has seen her rise more than a hundred places on the ladder. But since she reached the Australian Open semi-final in January, altitude sickness may have set in, judging by a sequence of four losses from her last five outings. It is a common experience for fast climbers.
