Azarenka to miss Fed Cup final over custody battle

Victoria Azarenka will miss this week's Fed Cup final in Minsk against the United States due to an ongoing custody battle with her baby son's father, the former world number one said on Tuesday.

Azarenka said she was unwilling to leave her son behind in California, where she has a home and where her child was born and must stay until his future is decided.

Caroline Wozniacki has become engaged again.

The Danish tennis player says on Twitter that she accepted a marriage proposal from American basketball player David Lee.

Alongside a photograph of her left hand showing an engagement ring, Wozniacki wrote "happiest day of my life yesterday saying yes to my soulmate."

Wozniacki split with golfer Rory McIlroy in 2014, days after their wedding invitations were sent out.

The third seeds overcame top-ranked Martina Hingis and Chan Yung-jan to bring an end to the Swiss 37-year-old's career in her last ever tournament on Saturday and followed up that triumph with a gutsy display in the final at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Julia Goerges clinched a career third WTA title with a straight-sets romp over Daria Kasatkina of Russia in the final of the Kremlin Cup on Saturday.

The seventh-seeded German prevailed 6-1, 6-2 in one hour six minutes to chalk up her third victory over the 20-year-old Kasatkina in their fifth head-to-head meeting.

"I just feel amazing," Goerges said on court after the match. "I've been working hard for this moment. I'm so happy and so emotional right now.

Few could have imagined, when Johanna Konta walked out for the Wimbledon semi-final on July 13, that she would end the season by splitting with her coach. Yet that was the latest development on Wednesday in what has been the ultimate Jekyll-and-Hyde season.

At that high point of the English midsummer, Konta stood just four sets away from a major title. Even when she succumbed to a command performance from Venus Williams – the eventual runner-up – she still climbed to No. 4 in the world. Since then, though, she has barely collected another rankings point.
