Svitolina ends Osaka's run to reach third round in Miami

Elina Svitolina ended Naomi Osaka's remarkable recent run with a 6-4 6-2 triumph over the Indian Wells champion in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday.

The Japanese, who followed her Indian Wells title run with a first-round victory over eight-times Miami champion Serena Williams this week, simply had no answer for Svitolina during their 83-minute clash.

Serena Williams lost to Naomi Osaka, 6-3, 6-2 in 1st round at Miami Open.

On the final point, Williams thundered forward to attack an easy shot at eye level, whacked the ball six feet past the baseline and responded with a sheepish smile.

Not that motherhood has mellowed Williams. She left without talking to the media.

Osaka, who earned her first career title at Indian Wells, said she was nervous at the start playing her idol for the first time. Osaka said her goal was to avoid Williams winning 6-0, 6-0.

Naomi Osaka defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-3, 6-2 to win the BNP Paribas Open title in Indian Wells.

Osaka's victory capped a run that included beating two-time winner Maria Sharapova, No. 5 Karolina Pliskova and top-ranked Simona Halep during the two-week tournament. She dropped one set in seven matches.

Osaka will rise from 44th to a career-high No. 22 in Monday's WTA Tour rankings.

Osaka needed just 70 minutes to dispatch No. 19 Kasatkina, who had an equally impressive showing in the desert.

Naomi Osaka crushed Simona Halep 6-3 6-0 in the semi-final at BNP Paribas Open.

Osaka's defeat of the top-seeded Halep stood out as the bigger of the two upsets, which played out under the lights on a chilly night in the California desert city of Indian Wells.

The Romanian had won all three of her previous meetings with the emerging Japanese player and looked poised to make a run to reclaim the title she won in 2015, but instead put in a puzzling performance full of uncharacteristic errors and little fight.

Maria Sharapova's return to Indian wells for the first time in three years ended in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Naomi Osaka.

Sharapova's ranking of No. 41 in the world forced her to play a first-round match in the tournament she has won twice. A failed doping test led to a 15-month ban for the five-time major winner.

She trailed 4-1 in the first set before holding serve at 4-all. But Osaka held to go up 5-4 and broke Sharapova on a double fault to close out the set.

Ranked 44th in the world, Osaka took a 4-2 lead in the second set. Sharapova broke to tie it 4-all before Osaka won the final two games to end the 1 1/2-hour match.

Naomi Osaka US Open Day 2 Interview

Naomi Osaka US Open Day 2 Interview

N. OSAKA/A. Kerber 6-3, 6-1
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You just beat the defending US Open champion. What does this mean to you?

NAOMI OSAKA: Well, it means a lot, I feel, especially since how I ended last year's US Open. But I tried not to think how good she was while I was playing her. I just tried to focus on what I could do to win the match, if that makes sense.

Q. You have been to the third round of all the Grand Slam events. It's not unusual for you to get through a first round, but to defeat an opponent like that and also in this grand stage at Arthur Ashe Stadium, talk about the emotions when you knew you had the match won.

Naomi Osaka upset defending champion Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-1 at the US Open first round.

As players ran for cover off the outside courts because of the rain, Osaka's big-hitting game and love of the big occasion thrived under the roof of the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Kerber became the first US Open women's defending champion to lose in the first round since Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2005.

Osaka 'preparing whole life' to face ex-Wimbledon champ Venus

Naomi Osaka wasn't even born when Venus Williams made her Wimbledon debut 20 years ago, but she believes her life has been building towards the moment they meet on a tennis court.

That time will come on Friday when they clash for a place in the last-16 at the All England Club.

"I kind of feel like I have been preparing for this my whole life," said Osaka, whose infectious conversation style is punctuated with liberal doses of 'like', 'kind of' and 'stuff'.

"I was supposed to play her in Auckland (in 2016 when Williams withdrew injured). So unfortunately that didn't happen.

Naomi Osaka defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-3 7-6 in the opening round at the All England Club.

Osaka, ranked 59, made her WTA main draw breakthrough in 2014 and has since beaten established players including Elina Svitolina, Venus Williams and Johanna Larsson in the last three years.

The 19-year-old, who was named WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2016, has struggled to maintain her momentum this year, failing to get past the third round in all but one of her competitions, a quarter-final loss at the Auckland Open in January.
