Svetlana Kuznetsova will miss next month's Australian Open as she recovers from wrist surgery, organizers confirmed on Friday.

The 32-year-old former French and U.S. Open champion was already rated doubtful and was missing from the official entry list when it was published on Friday along with China's world number 94 Zheng Saisai, who has a right knee problem.

Reigning champion Serena Williams was included in the field for the first grand slam of the year but remains a doubt for the event after giving birth to a daughter in September.

Serena Williams has accepted a place at the Australian Open and is "anticipated to return" to the tournament in January, less than five months after giving birth, organisers said Friday.

The defending women's champion was among 98 of the 100 top women, and all of the men's top 100, to be "confirmed" for the season's opening Grand Slam, they said.

World number ones Simona Halep and 16-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will both be in Melbourne, but all eyes will be on Williams, who won this year's tournament while pregnant.

Q. You finally got rid of Steffi Graf in a way. Took awhile, but you deserve it. What is the satisfaction?

It's a great feeling. No better place to do it than Melbourne.
