Kerber hires Fissette as new coach

Angelique Kerber is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing campaign with the announcement that Belgian Wim Fisette will replace Torben Beltz as her coach in 2018, the German said on Thursday.

After winning two grand slams and an Olympic silver medal in 2016, the 29-year-old failed to claim a single title this year and fell to 21st in the world rankings, also losing her spot as German number one to Julia Goerges.

Angelique Kerber US Open Day 2 Interview

Angelique Kerber US Open Day 2 Interview

N. OSAKA/A. Kerber 6-3, 6-1
THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Obviously a disappointment. What would you ascribe the loss to?

ANGELIQUE KERBER: I think, yeah, it was not my day, completely not my day today. Of course, matches are always different than practice, and I just can say that I was practicing a lot in the last few weeks and months.
Yeah, of course it's not the result, and I'm sad, but, yeah, I don't know. Yeah, match is always different.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about her game? She played very, very well and she's very young. What do you see in her?

Kerber knocked out in U.S. Open first round

Naomi Osaka upset defending champion Angelique Kerber 6-3 6-1 at the US Open first round.

As players ran for cover off the outside courts because of the rain, Osaka's big-hitting game and love of the big occasion thrived under the roof of the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

Kerber became the first US Open women's defending champion to lose in the first round since Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2005.

Kerber loses in 4th round to Muguruza at Wimbledon, will lose No. 1 ranking

Angelique Kerber loses in 4th round to Garbine Muguruza at Wimbledon, will lose No. 1 ranking

Garbine Muguruza upset Angelique Kerber 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to move onto the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Muguruza battled back from a tough first set, playing some outstanding tennis over the last two. The Spaniard had 55 winners compared to just 27 for Kerber, and she converted on four of her eight break point opportunities.

Overall, it was a tight match — both players won exactly 101 points — that took nearly two-and-a-half hours to complete. But when it mattered most, it was Muguruza who won the crucial points in the third set.

Angelique Kerber talks to the media after the 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win against Shelby Rogers

Q. You were 4-2 down in the second set. How happy are you that you pulled this one out?

What really made the difference between winning and losing today?
ANGELIQUE KERBER: Yeah, I think I was down 2-4, and I think I had breakpoint also against me 2-5.

But, yeah, it was tough to find my rhythm actually. She played very well from the first point. She was hitting the balls very hard. I was just trying to finding at the end my rhythm. In the second set I was starting to feeling the ball better and better.

Kerber moves into Wimbledon third round

Kerber moves into Wimbledon third round

Angelique Kerber eased into the third round of Wimbledon with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Kirsten Flipkens.

Kerber was beaten by Serena Williams in last year's Wimbledon final and with the American star sidelined while she prepares to give birth, the world number one hopes to fill the power vacuum at the All England Club.

After winning the Australian and US Opens last year, Kerber has endured a miserable time in 2017, culminating in an embarrassing French Open first round loss to Ekaterina Makarova last month.
